Good Kitchen Appliances
I recently remodeled my kitchen and did extensive upgrades on everything. The thing I am most happy with are my new appliances. I replaced my old white Whirlpool appliances with new stainless steel GE appliances. I did this fridge, which I absolutely love, it is a built in 42” GE Profile fridge that has so many bells and whistles it blows my mind. The cook top I did was a 42” range top stainless GE also. The only appliance I did not use GE for was the dishwasher. I went with a Bosch instead since the last GE dishwasher I had broke after only 2 years. So after I got several people’s options I went with a very nice stainless Bosch dishwasher.
The ovens I went with are very nice. I used a double convection GE oven that has a ton of features. Using that thing is like working on a computer. The microwave is not that much to look at due to the fact my budget started to get a little stretched so I decided to go with a cheaper one so I could spend money on the items I felt were more important. The center piece of the whole kitchen though is the vent hood. It is a hammered copper vent hood and is totally awesome looking in the space. When my friends come over they constantly ask me how much it cost and where could they get one.
Design your Kitchen to Match your Lifestyle
All kitchens do not have to be designed and have a lay out in the same manner. Many loft homes today place a kitchen in the center of activity while a small cottage may have to utilize two adjacent walls to save space. The point is that the old rule of thumb that a kitchen is either L-shaped, U-shaped, or galley-style is no longer written in stone.
Curves and Kitchens
Most homes have square walls and following this space with cabinets and appliances just makes sense. A large open loft or a warehouse that has been turned into living space can let your mind run wild in alternative designs for living, particularly the kitchen area. Instead of trying to disguise an old wall that has seen better days, set up a modular half-circle wall as your blank canvas. This wall can be the main hub for wiring a stove, exhaust fan and refrigerator. Rounded countertops and cabinets separate the appliances. Use a matching lower curved bar on the outside of the kitchen that holds a centralized sink and cabinets beneath. What would have been a galley kitchen has now been stretched into a spacious, elegant kitchen.
Lake Cottages
A lake cottage can be the perfect way to get away when on a tight schedule. Setting up a kitchen for convenience instead of making gourmet meals is all that matters when you want some quiet time. A single wall with compact appliances and an antique side table that acts as a room divider can make you feel comfortable and right at home. Use open-faced cabinets that display your dishes and supplies to know just where everything is. Your kitchen will become one with the living space but stay separate with just a small piece of furniture acting as a divider.
Outdoor/Indoor Kitchens
People spend thousands of dollars on outdoor kitchens that offer a great connection to nature. By utilizing one kitchen for both indoors and out, though, you can save a lot of time, space and money. Use a wall of glass sliding doors that is the only dividing factor between an indoor kitchen and dining or living section immediately outside. Create a design as if interior and exterior areas were one in the same space. In creating a natural flowing design, all of the appliances and cabinetry should line the interior wall and leave open space between. No walls, doors, counters or furniture block the unification of the blended indoor/outdoor room.
There are several examples of kitchen layouts that seem to break all the rules but this is also the beautiful thing about kitchen design. In the end, the type of lifestyle that one leads should dictate the layout of any space. There may be situations where a large custom-made stove could even appear in a separate room from the rest of the kitchen. Making your space work to your individualism is much more important than keeping the perfect triangle of a floor plan that was so important of proper kitchen design in the past.
